A recent study, "Physicians with Defined Clear Care Pathways have Better Discharge Disposition and Lower Cost", published in the Journal of Arthroplasty with John Tessier, and Signature Medical Group as co-authors, highlights the importance of defined post-acute care pathways for treatment of Medicare patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. For physician groups implementing defined clinical care pathways compared to groups without defined pathways:
- Episode costs were $3,189 less for elective hip arthroplasty
- Elective knee arthroplasty episode costs were $2,466 less
- Post-acute care utilization reductions were between 7 percent to 79 percent
- Incident rate reductions ranged from 44 percent to 79 percent
